The Farmer Norton site draws its name from Sir James Farmer, who founded a millwright and engineering business in 1852 on Adelphi Street, Salford.
The company, later incorporated in 1895 as Sir James Farmer Norton & Co. Ltd, manufactured textile machinery and industrial equipment, employing hundreds and exporting globally. Sir James Farmer also served as Mayor of Salford in the 1880s.
Historic images show the Adelphi Ironworks built in red and blue brick, reflecting the robust industrial character of the area. Archaeological studies of the site have revealed structural remains and machinery footings, underlining its industrial past.
