dRMM join a consortium of experts to research the potential of UK hardwood
dRMM are proud to be part of a consortium of timber experts leading a research project into the potential of English woodland to provide hardwood for homegrown products from the construction industry.
The project is led by the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering’s (NMITE) Centre for Advanced Timber Technology (CATT) and is funded by the Forestry Commission’s Timber in Construction Innovation Fund with the purpose of increasing the use of natural carbon sequestering material in the built environment.
We will be working with a team of project partners including Ecosystems Technologies, Edingburgh Napier University and Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST), to assess the suitability of UK native timber species such as oak, beech, sweet chestnut, birch, sycamore, ash, alder, and willow for the production of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (glulam). Strategies for applying timber use to modern methods of construction will enable data collection leading to strength grading of each species. The potential to use timber at scale in other ways, such as wood fibre insulation, will also be explored.

Widening the range of species that provide a domestic wood supply could also provide a boost for localised manufacturing facilities and supply chains.”

As long-standing material innovators, dRMM are skilled in the development of timber products. In 2013 we worked with the American Hardwood Export Council and ARUP to produce Tulip Wood Cross Laminated timber – the world’s first hardwood CLT – for use in Endless Stair. This material was then taken forward in 2017 with our Maggie’s Centre in Oldham – the world’s first hardwood CLT building.
Earlier this year, we were awarded a grant from the Built by Nature accelerator fund for ‘Measuring Mass Timber’ a research study into the whole life carbon and quality of life impacts of mass timber buildings. The study aims to drive the adoption of timber and mass timber construction among mainstream designers and to support advocacy of timber at a policy level.
