The glass floor at One Centaur Street

[1]

When the 300m2 glass louvres for the semi-enclosed stairwell at No.One Centaur Street were made to the wrong size by the fabricator, we wondered how we could make use of them and avoid it all going to landfill.

We decided to use them in our studio as a flat ‘carpet’ of glass, revealing the underfloor heating system below it – a pattern of pipes set in pre-routed pink foam blocks.  This audacious floor was a demonstration of problem-solving – we installed 1mm acrylic under the glass to spread the load whilst timber pieces were inserted to make the floor fit the rooms perfectly. And we were always extra careful not to get coffee spills trapped between the layers.
