Berlin studio working on Kindergarten retrofit
We’ve been working for Evangelischen Kitaverband Mitte-West Berlin, on a retrofit and expansion project transforming a 1950s concrete-frame building in Berlin.
Kita Alt-Schmargendorf currently houses a kindergarten on the ground floor, with a first floor hall used for church events.
Our design increases the Kita’s capacity and reconfigures the first floor hall to create more space for children, whilst ensuring a clear separation between the age groups. The ground floor interiors are being extensively modernised to ensure efficient use of space and to create an age-appropriate and welcoming atmosphere for the ‘little ones’.
Central to the project is collaboration with the community. We’ve worked closely with the Client, staff, parents, and – most importantly – the children themselves. A series of workshops with the youngest users has been particularly inspiring: children helped shape the proposals, shared their ideas, and brought infectious enthusiasm to the project. Their input has been a driving force in refining our designs, ensuring the space works for the people who use it every day.
Sustainability and reuse are embedded in the approach, with existing materials retained wherever possible to reduce carbon emissions and support the project’s budget. Construction is set to begin in summer 2026, with a timeline that will allow the kindergarten to continue operating on the ground floor throughout the works.
