dRMM: Building from Forests, currently on show at the V&A South Kensington, has been shortlisted for the 2026 Wood Awards. The whole team are pleased to see recognition for our exploration of how underused British hardwoods could contribute to the future of timber construction.
Over three years, the project investigated the structural potential of seven UK-grown hardwood species: birch, beech, sweet chestnut, sycamore, ash, alder and oak. Working with partners NMITE, Edinburgh Napier University, BE-ST and Ecosystems Technologies, the research looked at how these species could be engineered into new recipes for products including cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam.
At the V&A, the installation brings our research to life through material samples, data visualisations, prototype components and architectural models. These sit alongside a lightweight timber barrel vault, demonstrating how the recipes can be used in structural form.
The display remains on show in the Furniture Gallery at the V&A until 30 October, with the Wood Awards announced towards the end of November.
