dRMM’s Coate Street studio is one of six projects shortlisted in the Adaptive reuse into office (up to £10 million) category at the AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards this year.
Completed in late 2024, 37 Coate Street transformed a former Victorian boot-making workshop in east London into dRMM’s new home. Rather than treating the building as a blank canvas, the design worked with its existing fabric and character, using reuse, repair and carefully judged interventions to create a flexible workspace that supports the practice’s evolving ways of working.
The project also reflects dRMM’s wider approach to retrofit and circular construction. Materials from our previous studio were repurposed throughout, while existing elements of the building were retained and adapted wherever possible. Environmental upgrades were introduced selectively to improve performance.
We’re particularly pleased to be shortlisted for this very personal project, which fuses our expertise in sustainably driven architecture with an organic approach to workplace design. Looking forward to the announcement in late September.
