Over the past year dRMM has led a local design team including Jas Bhalla Works, nimtim architects, Feix & Merlin, Dowen Farmer Architects, and landscape architects Gillespies to create plans for Berkeley’s redevelopment of the Aylesham Centre, Peckham. Proposals for the mixed-use development were shaped by the local community and a planning application has now been submitted to Southwark Council.
The scheme presents new proposals for the former Aylesham shopping centre, including a mix of residential, workspace and retail spaces, as well as a new supermarket.
Our collaboration with the other architects has been invaluable, informing the masterplan from the very start. Their local knowledge combined with our research has enabled us to stitch the scheme into the local context. Building on the character of Peckham, our whole approach has been inspired by the architecture, use of colour, visible creativity, and wonderful spaces in and around the town centre, and we have incorporated this richness and variety into our proposals.
The submitted masterplan prioritises layering of building heights and uses an orientation strategy that creates views through the site. Public realm and access to open space is central to the proposals, maintaining the pedestrian journey, play space and trees as a priority.
dRMM’s experience in masterplanning and redevelopment design is extensive, with us having worked on significant city-making schemes in some of London’s most high-profile renewal areas. This project builds on our evolving research and practical exploration of mixed-use typologies and signifies our strongest focus on retail, leisure and workspace typologies to date. Our goal is to understand how place-making can evolve in line with the emerging needs of city-dwellers, all while acknowledging vernacular precedent and championing design excellence as a conduit for stewardship and longevity.
