Collaborations

We believe our best ideas come from conversations with diverse creative voices. Some of our most exciting projects have been collaborative—from WoodBlock House, the single-family dwelling and artist studio with UK artist Richard Woods, to Rundeskogen, the multi-unit housing triptych with Helen & Hard Architects. We also work with engineers, manufacturers, suppliers, artists, thinkers, makers, writers, strategists and critics to help cultivate our ideas and enhance our designs. Through collaboration with multidisciplinary experts, we have been able to introduce new materials and building typologies to the industry, advance our research and development on construction techniques, and discover new ways architecture can function as a tool to improve society.

We believe in breaking down boundaries between construction disciplines

dRMM designs places that bring clear benefits to the world. We believe that in order to do this, the construction industry must work to break down conventional boundaries between existing disciplines. This means strengthening collaboration and promoting unified goals between architects, engineers, planners, developers and suppliers. We have spent years building a robust network of multi-disciplinary brain power, consistently calling on external collaborators to feed our creative process and help make our designs richer and more robust.

Thinking outside the box means bringing in new voices to the table

Some of our most memorable projects have been designed through collaborative processes. Our work at Kingsdale School saw us collaborating with Gordon Cowley on a geodesic auditorium, as well as with Atelier van Lieshout to convert internal ventilation services into large scale sculpture. Our collaboration with the American Hardwood Export Council on Endless Stair resulted in the creation of the first ever Tulipwood cross-laminated timber; whilst working closely with Arup engineers on the Sky Health & Fitness Centre culminated in the development of a timber superbeam strong enough to support an expansive column-free gym space. These, and many other dRMM projects, demonstrate our strong commitment to working collaboratively.

We are not put off by construction, site or contextual complexities – we embrace these as design challenges. We have a proven track record in delivering buildings on time and on budget, having developed systems that allow us to work efficiently under pressure without ever compromising on quality. These include design review processes, quality checks and risk assessments. We maintain transparent and ongoing dialogue with clients throughout the entire lifespan of a project, demonstrating our belief that the design journey of any given building or space should be a shared one.
