dRMM has won a competition to design a sports hall for a primary school, just outside Berlin.
The two court, multi-purpose facilities will host activities such as gymnastics, basketball and football, as well as providing much needed space for after school care, and for local sports clubs. Commissioned and funded by the Dallgow-Döberitz Municipality, the sports hall designs will complement the existing campus.
The competition design creates a rational, economical, yet exciting solution to the brief. By creating accessible and compact buildings, all the programme requirements fit on one floor, removing the need for costly and space hungry stairs and lifts. Adjacent to each sports court is a compact and efficiently planned single storey volume containing equipment storage, changing rooms and technical spaces. Double-sided spectator seating provides a connection between the outdoor play area and the new facilities. Proposed materials include a glulam frame clad with CLT, which reduces embodied carbon and minimises disruption.
A low-tech approach, with reduced maintenance and operational costs is planned, with air source heat pumps, natural ventilation and underfloor heating providing cooling and heating. The team are looking at various scenarios of how the new building can contribute to the decarbonisation plans of both the School and the wider Municipality.
The team of specialist consultants who will be working on the project include Gruppe F for Landscape Design, and Leitwerk GmbH who will be overseeing the construction stage. dRMM look forward to developing these designs further, in consultation with the school and the client, to create a robust, yet flexible timber building that will serve the local community.
