dRMM exhibits at the RA Summer Exhibition 2021
dRMM is thrilled to be showing two pieces this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, which opens today. Our work forms part of this year’s architecture room, curated by David Adjaye to the theme of ‘Climate and Geography’.
In keeping with the studio’s longstanding focus on sustainable research and construction, the exhibits relate to themes around climate change and timber respectively. The first piece, titled dRMM Declares!, is a hand painted placard made in the dRMM studio by Maxim Tooker in the run up to the 2019 Global Climate Strike. On Friday 20 September 2019, the dRMM team took recess from regular studio work to assemble and march with the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and other building professionals, walking to Millbank House as part of a global rally and sounding a collective national ‘Climate Alarm’ at 1pm.
The second piece, titled Treeptych, is an original artwork examining the use of timber in construction, with frame by funiture maker and friend of the studio, Sebastian Cox. The triptych has been conceived in the tradition of renaissance artworks, showcasing different aspects of building with wood – from coppicing to construction. Our team collaborated with furniture maker Sebastian Cox who made a bespoke timber frame for the artwork, with each pane of the triptych utilising a different underused native UK timber species, namely sycamore, ash and cherry.
In the spirit of medieval artworks our piece is packed with symbolism, which is further explored in a series of three thought pieces written by our Sustainability and Regenerative Design Manager Kat Scott and our Architectural Assistant Finbar Charleson.
The RA Sumer Exhbition runs from 22 September 2021 to 2 January 2022, open Tues-Sun 10am to 6pm. Tickets are available online here
