Earls Court and Open City schools’ programme
dRMM have taken part in Young City Makers, a programme run by Open City in collaboration with the Earls Court Development Company. It introduces students, aged 8-11, to the built environment sector and asks them to consider the role they can each play in shaping their city.
We were partnered with Avonmore Primary School, located less than a mile from the Earls Court site. As Avonmore itself is about to be redeveloped, with their new school opening in 2027, we asked the pupils to imagine a future playspace as part of those plans. Using concepts such as Zoo, Sports, Library and Theme Park the children used their creativity and imagination to develop their ideas, then built physical models to show what their playspaces could look like.
We encouraged their spaces to be fun, exciting and eccentric, whilst encouraging the class to think about the topic of ‘re-use’ and how they would improve existing elements within their school. A shared celebration event at the end of the programme brought teachers, students and parents together to look at everyone’s work, and develop their public speaking skills as they spoke about their designs.
