This month’s return to school has breathed life into Wintringham Primary academy, a new-build timber school which provides an inspirational learning environment by surrounding pupils with nature.
On Sunday the school made critic’s choice in the Observer’s New Review, with Rowan Moore writing favourably about the school’s use of dRMM’s signature construction material – cross laminated timber, It’s rapid pace of construction and the way it exceeds the requirements of the government’s Building Bulletins – functionalist documents which currently set out requirements for school design.
Moore celebrates the well-considered process undertaken to ensure the school meets the needs of the new community that is forming around it. Wintringham provides vital civic infrastructure to a 2500 home residential development in St Neots, Cambridgeshire. The school was designed according to the outcomes of thorough local engagement with significant input from Headteacher Tracy Bryden who was committed to building a school that was designed to uphold the philosophy of teaching outside.
Wintringham is the latest in a long tradition of education projects designed and built by dRMM. Our work in the sector started over 15 years ago with our work on Kingsdale School – a nationally significant education project which provided the much-needed overhaul which reversed the fate of a struggling South London secondary school.
